EINKAREM

Judas was delirious with exhaustion. He sat in the center of Einkarem, slouched on the ground with his back against the village well. In his hand was a large clay bowl filled with water. He slurped down water by the mouthful.

He’d left Banias at dawn and it was now near midday. His feet were sore and blistered. Never had he run so far and so fast.

There’d been no walking breaks. He’d been too frightened the zombies would catch him.

Upon reaching Einkarem, he’d tried to locate John the weapons master. No one was forthcoming with his location. Finally, a man claiming to be John’s younger cousin had taken the letter Judas carried. The man instructed Judas to wait by the well.

He had only been to Einkarem a few times. The village looked nothing like the Einkarem he remembered. For one thing, there were Nabataean soldiers everywhere. The men had dark skin and thick black hair. They looked dangerous with their swords. Many were covered with cuts, bruises, and bandages, like they had seen battle recently.

Nabataean horses grazed just outside the village. Never in his life had Judas thought he would live to see the famous war stallions from the south. They were massive animals, nothing like the rangy horses he was used to.

It wasn’t just the presence of the Nabataean soldiers and their horses that was strange. There was also a large contingent of Ja’ru Protectors in the village. They were camped between the houses and outside of the village. Many of them bore the signs of recent battle like the Nabataeans.

Judas might be young, but it didn’t take a scholar to know some sort of bloody conflict had taken place—a battle that involved Ja’ru Protectors and Nabataean soldiers.

His mind replayed Mati’s words.

Herod and his priestess of Morta are spreading sickness across Galilee. She is resurrecting the dead with unholy necromancy.

He squeezed his eyes shut in anguish. He had to get back to Kerioth. If Berel and his family were indeed zombies like the ones he’d met in Banias, the entire village was in danger.

Even worse, Amos had been bitten. How long before he turned into a zombie? Would he realize he was infected and lock himself up before it was too late?

Why had he been so foolish? Why had he not come straight to Einkarem as instructed? His side trips to Masada and Banias had cost him a full day’s delay.

The bag of coins that hung from his belt felt heavy. Judas half wished the weight of them would pull him into the ground so he could disappear forever.

“Judas.”

He looked up as John’s cousin approached. At his side was a dark-haired young woman. From the graceful way they both walked, Judas assumed they were Protectors.

Both were covered in their fair share of cuts and bruises. The man had a partially healed wound on the side of his neck. It looked like he’d been bitten by an animal of some kind.

The staffs they carried weren’t like regular shepherd staffs. The ends had been sharpened to points, like double-headed spears.
